Do you need a website if you have Instagram?

The Get Found Playbook · 5 min read · By Mo

Loads of local businesses run entirely on Instagram or Facebook, and it works well enough that a website feels optional. I get it. But there are a few things social can't do for you, and they're the things that quietly cost you customers. Here's the honest version.

What social does well

Let's be fair: social is great for showing your work, building a following, and staying in touch with people who already know you. If Instagram is bringing you customers, keep at it. This isn't an either/or. The question is what it leaves on the table.

You don't own it

Your Instagram account isn't yours, it's rented. The algorithm decides who sees your posts, the rules change without warning, and accounts get locked or hacked with no real support to call. Build your whole business on rented ground and you're one suspension away from starting over. A website is the one thing online that's actually yours.

Google can't rank a feed the way it ranks a site

When someone searches for what you do, Google leans on real websites and Business Profiles, not your Instagram grid. No website means you're largely invisible in search, and search is where people go when they're ready to buy, not just browse.

Social is for browsing, a site is for deciding

People scroll social to be entertained. They visit a website when they're deciding whether to spend money. A site can lay out your services, prices, reviews and a clear way to book in a way a feed simply can't. It's built to turn interest into a booking.

AI tools point to websites

Ask ChatGPT or Google's AI for a local recommendation and it draws on structured, crawlable sources, websites and profiles, not social posts. As more people search that way, not having a site means not existing in those answers.

The move

Keep the social you're good at. Add a simple, fast website that you own, that ranks, and that closes the sale. They work together: social brings the attention, the site turns it into customers. That's exactly what my get-found service sets up, without you having to become a web person.

Get found, done for you Rather I just handle all of this? That's the whole point.
