The 5 website mistakes costing local businesses customers

The Get Found Playbook · Part 3 · 5 min read

I've built and rebuilt a lot of sites, and the same handful of mistakes come up again and again, quietly costing owners customers they never even knew they lost. Here are the five biggest, and exactly how to fix each.

1. There's no clear next step

Someone lands on your site, likes what they see, and then has no idea what to do. No obvious button, no phone number in reach, no "get a quote." Every extra second of confusion loses people. The fix is simple: one clear, obvious next step on every page, call, book, or request a quote, repeated where it counts.

2. It's invisible to Google and AI

A beautiful site that nobody can find does nothing. Most local sites have no schema, weak structure, and no connection to a Google Business Profile, so search engines and AI tools can't understand or surface them. The fix is to build it to be found from the start: clean structure, local schema, and your Google profile set up properly. (That's part one of this series.)

3. It's slow, especially on phones

Most local customers are searching on their phone, often standing outside or in a hurry. If your site takes more than a couple of seconds to load, a big chunk of them are gone before they've seen anything. The fix is a fast, lightweight build, no bloated templates or plugins dragging it down.

4. It doesn't build trust

People buy from businesses they trust, and a website earns or loses that in seconds. No reviews, stock photos instead of your real work, a dated design, all of it makes a visitor hesitate. The fix is proof: real photos of your work, genuine reviews, and a clean, current look that matches how good you actually are.

5. It's a pain to update, so it never gets updated

Wrong hours, an old phone number, last year's prices, these creep in when a site is a hassle to change. Stale information frustrates customers and makes you look inattentive. The fix is a site that's genuinely easy to update, so keeping it current takes minutes, not a developer and a week.

The through-line

Every one of these costs you the customer at the exact moment they were ready to act, which makes them expensive in a way you never see on a report. The good news is they're all fixable, and fixing them is a lot cheaper than quietly losing the business. If you'd rather not think about any of it, that's what I do, get found, done for you.

Get found, done for you Rather I just handle all of this? That's the whole point.
